No es novedad mi completo desdén por el mero concepto de agua embotellada. El litro de agua embotellada (mineral, mineralizada o como quieran) cuesta unas 2000 veces más que el litro de agua de la canilla y es muchísimo más costosa desde el punto de vista energético. En EE.UU. se gastan 1,5 millones de barriles de petróleo por año para producir las 2,7 millones de toneladas de plástico necesario para fabricar las botellas.
Por otro lado el agua de red es potable, segura y nos llega a nuestras casas mediante un tubo sin la necesidad de ir transportando botellas de acá para allá ni aumentando la cantidad de basura que tiramos. Desde mi punto de vista el agua embotellada es un gran fraude dañino para el bolsillo y el medio ambiente.
Pero en Argentina ahora nos quieren hacer creer que esto no es así. En una propaganda con música relajante y un niño rubio jugando y preocupado por el futuro, un guardaparque sin nombre nos trata de vender el cuento de que si tomás agua de cierta marca vas a salvar los bosques.
¿Qué huella vas a dejar?
La realidad es otra. Más allá de la buena voluntad (o intento de crear una imagen positiva) de las compañías de agua mineral, la mejor forma de que los hijos del niño rubio de la publicidad puedan disfrutar de nuestro planeta es tomando agua de red en vez de agua embotellada (de la marca que sea).
Según un estudio realizado en Italia y publicado en Nature Precedings, el agua embotellada tiene una huella de carbono 285 veces más alta que el agua de la canilla. Para producir, transportar y consumir 1,5 litros de agua en botella hay que emitir 0,26 Kg de CO2 equivalente, ¿parece poco? Para producir, transportar y consumir esa misma cantidad de agua pero de la canilla se usan 0,00091 Kg de CO2 eq. Por cada botella de agua que no comprás, estás evitando emitir 1/4 Kg de CO2. Pero la publicidad no habla de calentamiento global, habla de deforestación. Dejando de lado los efectos que el calentamiento global pudiera tener en los bosques, hay otro concepto que sirve para evaluar el impacto del agua embotellada en el suelo: la Huella Ecológica. Esto hace referencia al área de tierra necesaria para general los recursos y asimilar los residuos de una actividad. ¿Cuántos metros cuadrados se usan para producir 1,5 litros de agua embotellada?
Para producir agua embotellada se necesita un área 300 más grande que para el agua de red. Mientras que por cada 1,5 litros de agua del grifo se necesitan sólo 0,0024 m2, hacen falta más de 0,7 m2 para producir, transportar y disponer de la basura producida por la botella de litro y medio.
Obviamente estos números exactos son sólo válidos para la región de Italia estudiada pero es difícil pensar que en Argentina las cosas podrían ser tan distintas para invertir esos números.
Que los espejitos de colores de una publicidad no te laven la cabeza. Si te interesa cuidar los bosques y el medio ambiente o cuidar el bolsillo, cambiá el agua mineral por el agua de red.
justamente, si compras agua villavicencio vas a proteger 1m^2 de deforestacion. Si descontas la huella ecologica tenes un 0,3m^2 de bosque que esta siendo protegido :P

Vamos a
ver. Para las necesidades biológicas básicas (hidratar el cuerpo) da exactamente
igual el agua “de la canilla” (lo pongo entre
comillas, porque soy de España y no es un término usual aquí) que la embotellada,
siempre y cuando ambas pasen los test de salubridad correspondientes.
Pero te
pongas, como te pongas, hay zonas donde el agua, por diversas razones, no sabe igual al paladar.
Yo vivo
en Madrid y agua “de la canilla” sabe excelente (mejor dicho, no sabe a nada,
por eso “sabe” bien). Pero en otras zonas de España (sobre todo cerca de la costa) por las razones que sea (concentración de
cloro, o de sales, o lo que sea) el agua “sabe” mal.
Estoy
completamente seguro que, desde el punto de vista, sanitario y biológico, ambas
son perfectamente potables y buenas, pero una me sabe mal y otra no. Y estoy
dispuesto a pagar la diferencia de precio.
Respecto
al asunto de la “huella ecológica”, por muy ciertos que sean los datos que aportas,
no deja de ser demagogia pura. En el 99% de los productos que se comercializan
en el “primer” mundo hay una descompensación brutal entre beneficios para la “calidad
de vida” y su “huella ecológica”.
¿Cuál es
la huella ecológica del los aparatos del aire acondicionado, de las bolsas de plástico
de las patatas fritas o de la energía que gastamos para tener agua caliente
para ducharnos por las mañanas? Pues bien, yo prefiero abanícame en verano,
tomar patatas fritas en bolsas biodegradables y ducharme con agua fría, que tomar
agua que me sabe mal.
Mat, si vos querés tomar agua embotellada y pagar unas 2000 veces más por litro porque "sabe mejor", hacelo. En los lugares donde no hay agua de red, obviamente que la única que queda es el agua embotellada. Pero eso es irrelevante al punto del post.

Respecto a los datos objetivos que aportas, evidentemente sí. Datos que yo no he puesto en duda en ningún momento.
Lo que yo intento decir es que hay una especie de "cruzada" por parte del escepticismo militante en contra del agua embotellada, como si fuera el arquetipo de "irracionalidad" y eso es inconsistente desde el punto de vista argumentativo. No hablo de tu artículo en concreto, sino de un marco general.
Si buscas en cualquier blog escéptico, encontraras muchas entradas "burlándose" del agua embotellada y ninguna en contra del agua caliente para la ducha.
¿Porqué el "sabor" del agua es objeto de befa y mofa y la temperatura del agua, no?
Irrelevante respecto al argumento. Así como también lo es la existencia o no de una "cruzada" en contra del agua embotellada (cruzada de la cual yo no estaba enterado). Respecto a “la cruzada” no estaba planteando ninguna “teoría de la conspiración” ni nada parecido.
Hay mucho que se puede debatir pero no veo por qué habría que debatir mis intenciones o las de otros "escépticos militantes". Pero no veo que propongas nada más que eso además de cuestiones subjetivas sobre si el sabor justifica un gasto más grande o no (que ya dije que quien quiera gastar unas 2000 veces más dinero y un impacto ambiental unas 300 veces mayor por un agua que les gusta más, pueden hacerlo).
ReplyDeleteAhora, podríamos hablar sobre si realmente tiene mejor gusto por el agua en sí o es una cuestión psicológica. Quizás no sea el caso del agua que vos comprás pero te recuerdo que el agua Dasani que se vendía en Londres no era más que agua del Támesis pasada por un filtro - algo que cualquiera podía hacer en su casa y que, al menos en mi juicio, no justifica el enorme costo adicional.
Existen varios estudios que muestran que la mayoría de la gente no puede distinguir el agua embotellada de la de la canilla sólo por el sabor (http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2011/aug/08/bottled-water-taste-research)
La otra opción es probar usando un filtro (como hacían los de Dasani) que seguro te sale más barato y probablemente tenga menor impacto.
Por otro lado, no hace falta ni packaging estrambótico ni propagandas por televisión para que la gente reconozca cuando el agua de la ducha está caliente o fría. Más aún, no hay ninguna propaganda que te diga que si te bañás con agua caliente vas a salvar los bosques.
Y tomar duchas más cortas también es algo que uno puede hacer si le interesa cuidar el planeta y el bolsillo. Eso es algo que yo hago habitualmente y recomendaría también que otros hicieran.

en España lo de “de canilla”

ASQUEROSA (aunque perfectamente potable desde el punto de vista salubre) te puedes
tomas agua embotellada mucho más rica a 1’50 el litro.
AJá. Seguro. Hay aguas embotelladas más caras que otras. En el estudio que linkeo en el post se muestra que tampoco es homogénea la huella de carbono ni la huella ecológica. Sí, estoy haciendo un promedio.

Mat, Daneel_Olivaw no habrá probado el agua de Almería, yo tampoco, pero he probado la de Palma de Mallorca, hace mucho y no se si ha mejorado, y entiendo tu argumento, pero creo que el texto no crítica que cuando la calidad del agua del grifo no es apta para su consumo, bien por su salubridad o bien por su sabor, se opte por el agua embotellada.
ReplyDeleteYo soy de Bilbao, y aquí tambien el agua del grifo es de muy buena calidad, y sin embargo, habitualmente te encuentras con mucha gente comprando agua embotellada, creo que las críticas van por ahí, además de criticar la publicidad que hace esa empresa, por que si bien es verdad, que comprando su agua salvas un bosque en ese parque natural, destrozas mas en otras partes.
Es como si una compañia petrolera, en su publicidad, dijese que usases tu coche en vez de el transporte publico, por que con cada litro de su gasolina plantan un árbol.

ReplyDeleteEstuve tratando de entender de que se trata eso del "m2 de bosque protegido", y tal vez sería necesario hacer una investigación bastante más profunda, Aquí van algunos datos:
- La Estancia La Fidelidad, de 250.000 ha (150 en Chaco y 100 en Formosa, en El Impenetrable) al parecer se encuentra en buen estado de conservación, en una región que está siendo fuertemente demontada.
- Pertenecía a Manuel Roseo desde la década del 70, quién realizó algunos emprendemientos sin mucho éxito. Poco ante de morir asesinado junto a su esposa o pareja, a ppios del 2011 había descubierto una estafa sobre sus tierras. Parece que no todos los papeles estaban en regla...
- A iniciativa del Gob. Capitanich, se expropiaron las tierrras de Chaco, para hacer una "Reserva de recursos" con el objeto de hacer un Parque Nacional.
- Pero falta comprar las tierras de Formosa, que vaya uno a saber a quien pertenecen, la exesposa de Roseo está todavía reclamando.
- Aquí aparece el "Banco de Bosques", una ONG liderada por Ezcurra, un exGreenpeace,que está recaudando fondos para comprar las tierras, para que sea uno de los Parques Nacionales más granndes e importantes de la Argentina, y salvar a los jaguares. Por lo que está recudando a razón de $ 1,40 por metro2 "de protección", ¡por mes!!!!!!!!. También está reciclando botellas de PET con este objetivo.
- La protección de villavicencio es de 1 m2 por cada botella de 1,5 l comprada durante los meses de mayo y junio de 2012 (¿a 1,4 $ por botella o les habrán hecho descuento por cantidad?) O sea que la protección es por estos dos meses, no vale la cuenta de 1m2- 0,7m2 del comentario anterior (no vale por muchas otras razones además).
Hay unas cuantas cosas que no huelen muy limpias por aquí, aunque, como ya dije, esto fue una búsqueda muy por encima y no garantizo que todo lo que dije sea correcto.
A todo esto quisiera agregar que la huella ecológica del agua mineral se multiplica infinitas veces en el mercado de las bebidas gaseosas, que no son más que agua con burbujas y azúcar (y lo digo como irracional adicta a la bebida oscura!)
Pmauca, está interesante lo que comentás. Mi idea no era adentrarme en la campaña específica de Villavicencio. De hecho, poco relevante me parecería si por cada botella protegieran 20 hectáreas; lo importante, desde mi punto de vista, es que el consumo de agua embotellada no es para nada sustentable y causa un estrés ecológico innecesario.
ReplyDeleteDe todas formas también es interesante analizar qué significa lo de 1m^2 de bosque protegido. ¿Vos lo que decís es que por cada botella "protegen" 1m^2 sólo por 2 meses? En ese caso sería un engaño adentro de otro engaño. Por lo que veo, la página de Villavicencio sólo tiene la imagen de la campaña y un link a su página en facebook. Es interesante que la imagen dice "Términos y condiciones en www.villavicencio.com.ar" pero en la página no hay nada más (ni siquiera google lo ve). Voy a ir a su Facebook a preguntar. ;)

Exactamente, es un engaño dentro de otro, y posiblemente sea toda una matrioshka (las muñequitas rusas) de engaños. Ni siquiera son dos meses. Por estos dos meses hacen un único aporte para la protección de 1 m2 por cada botella vendida. No dicen de cuanto es el aporte. ¿Alcanza para comprar 1 m2? El Banco de Bosques en su página web pide $1,4 de "donación" por mes (sin definir cuantos meses) para la protección de 1m2, pero tampoco dice que eso alcance para comprarlo, solo para "protegerlo".
ReplyDeleteEl establecimiento de una Reserva Natural necesita dinero, y las reservas pueden ser privadas. Pero al menos desde el lado de Chaco esto sería un Parque Nacional. En fin, me gustaría que la información sobre todo esto fuera mucho más clara...

En resumen. Villavicencio va a donar $1.000.000 a la Fundación Banco de Bosques más lo que se recaude hasta el 30/06 (contato $0,0438 por botella) o hasta $1.000.000. Eso son casi 23 millones de botellas. La verdad que no sé cuán factible es que lleguen a ese número, pero lo mejor que puede pasar es que donen $2.000.000.
¿Vos decís que la protección cuesta $1,40 por mes por m^2?....
¡Tenés razón! En la página (www.bancodebosques.org) se pueden hacer donaciones recurrentes y proteger 10m^2 de bosque "sale" $14 por mes. ¿De dónde sacaron el cálculo los de Danone? Pregunto en Facebook ;)
Como campaña, no parece demasiado mala. Osea, no creo que nadie opine que $2.000.000 donados para la conformación de una reserva natural son mala cosa; pero ese no es el punto, ¿no?. El punto es que el planeta no se preserva haciendo reservas naturales, se preserva desarrollando métodos sustentables de explotación; parte de esos métodos incluye la cultura y los hábitos y, por más campañas que hagan, la compra de agua embotellada no puede ser más ecológica que el agua de red (que también puede mejorarse).
Creo que dice mucho que en su página de Facebook tengan una sección de "ecotips" que, si bien nos dice que "A la hora de comer, evitá los paquetes y las bolsas plásticas", no dice "a la hora de comer, cargá agua de la canilla en una jarra". También nos dicen que compremos las cosas "tamaño familiar" porque "ahorrás mucho en envase y además suele ser más barato y rendidor"... La ironía, me quema.
Epa!!! O sea que 1ha le sale $438 a villavicencio y $14.000 a cualquier donante individual de la FBB (Fundación banco de bosques). ¡Yo también quiero conseguir esos descuentos!!!! Esto suponiendo que las donanciones mensuales se aplican cada vez a proteger nuevas porciones del bosque. ¿Quién se queda con la diferencia???? Otras empresas que están protegiendo bosques, según el mapita de la FBB, son Weleda y Allianz, ¿cuánto les habrá costado a ellos el m2?
ReplyDeleteTotalmente de acuerdo con lo que decís sobre sustentabilidad. Por otra parte, es imprescindible detener la deforestación. Entre 1998 y 2002 en Argentina se deforestaron 200.000 ha por año, y entre 2002 y 2006, 300.000 ha por año (UMSEF, SAyDS). Estas emisiones fueron descaradamente subvaluadas en el Inventario Nacional de Gases de Efecto Invernadero del 2000 (el último realizado). Y la Ley de Bosques (aprobada en 2007, creo) pide que las provincias establezcan un Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial indicando en que zonas se pueden realizar las distintas actividades. Inmediatamente se aprobaron ordenamientos territoriales en las provincias más deforestadoras del país. Por ej, en Salta, es posible seguir deforestando por los próximos 20 años, hasta que queden apenas vestigios de bosque...
En fin, un tema para seguir charlando.
Nube, ya me respondieron. La discordancia surge de que los precios que estamos viendo son para un proyecto en Misiones, no en el Chaco. Según los de Villavicencio, "en ese lugar sí que el precio es mayor dado que en Misiones la tierra es mucho más cara que en El Impenetrable".
ReplyDeleteEs decir, estábamos comparando cosas que no se podían comparar. De todas formas la diferencia de precio (32 veces más) y que una sea mensual y la otra sea una donación puntual me hacen sospechar de que probablemente la igualdad "1 botella = 1 m^2" no es muy confiable.
En parte la confusión surge porque cuando entrás al Banco de Bosques te pregunta si querés ser protector de La Fidelidad, y depués aparece el mapita, que , efectivamente es de Misiones. La donación por mes dice $14 por 10 m2, y puede estar indicando que protegés 10 m2 nuevos cada mes.
ReplyDeleteMe comentaron que la pcia del Chaco pagaría a los hijos de Manuel Roseo (el propietario asesinado) 12 millones de dólares por las 150.000 ha y parece que es la FBB (o sus donadores) la que pondría la plata ..lo que da aprox los $400 por ha. Supongamos que todo esto es limpio (los hijos de Roseo son muy necesitados, no habían sido reconocidos, pero se hizo un análisis de ADN... en fin, toda una telenovela...) y que terminaremos teniendo un buen parque nacional en El Impenetrable.
Así que nos quedamos casi con el problema inicial: una publicidad algo-bastante engañosa, ya que 1 botella = 1m2 rige solo para las botellas que comprás en estos 2 meses de campaña; los 4 centavos por botella de donación, que si querés proteger bosque, mejor donálos directamente...y la tremenda huella ecológica de una botella de agua mineral multiplicada por los millones de botellas que se venden.
El agua villavicencio es deliciosa, es naturalmente mineral y sabe muy distinto a la de la canilla, hace años que la consumo y me encanta poder aportar un grano de arena para proteger un bosque, ya que de todas formas la pensaba seguir consumiendo.
